Case Study: Monolithic Table for Judith Neilson
The importance of engaging an expert maker
Manufacturing partnerships determine whether exceptional design becomes exceptional reality. Without expertise in execution, even the finest concepts disappoint.
Adam Goodrum understands this. Commissioned by Judith Neilson to create a solid timber dining table of monumental scale for her Chippendale residence, he chose his manufacturing partner carefully.

Why engage Evostyle
Adam engaged Evostyle because we know solid timber—how it moves, how it behaves, what it demands. For a bespoke piece at this investment level, Judith expected decades of performance without the issues that plague incorrectly manufactured solid timber furniture.
"Solid timber furniture is not only beautiful and long lasting, but it can be temperamental if not detailed and manufactured correctly," says Luke Ommundson, Director of Evostyle.
The experience of working with Rock Maple
This apparently simple design demanded complex execution. With nearly 5 cubic metres of Rock Maple required—and timber in short supply—every piece needed individual examination and sorting for colour and grain.

Ben Griffiths, Head Cabinetmaker at Evostyle, approaches challenges methodically:
"I love thinking the job through right from the beginning. Rock Maple is beautiful to machine and work with, however it does tend to have a bit of movement, so you need to be very careful with how you glue the timber to minimise expansion and contraction."

The experience of working with experts
Ben considered not just structural integrity but aesthetic contribution. "My experience with laminating timber boards in a diagonal pattern meant I was aware how important it was to select boards with the right colour to create a radiating pattern out from the centre. Otherwise, it would just look like a dog's breakfast."
Each stick of timber was sorted, labelled, and positioned to achieve the radiating diamond pattern.

Special considerations during manufacture
With 170mm tabletop thickness and 400 hours of craftsmanship invested, this table required substantial pre-planning. Weight determined strategy—the table was divided into four segments for machining and handling.

Even individual quadrants required forklift movement around the workshop and onto CNC machines. The real consideration: reassembly on site. This meant substantial hidden mechanical hardware with on-site adjustment capability.

Benefits of working with Evostyle – thought to every detail
A butterfly detail conceals the mechanical fixings—a feature visible only from beneath, yet finished with the same attention as the visible surfaces.
